Chandigarh Municipal Corporation to get its first watertop floating 2 MWp solar power plant.


The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, will get its first watertop floating solar power plant at the Sector 39 waterworks. This 2 MWp floating SPV power plant will be set up by the Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST) under the CAPEX mode where all expenditure will be borne by CREST..

When commissioned, this solar power plant will generate 28 lakh units per annum and by selling power at Rs 4.96 per kilowatt, it is expected to generate an annual earning of Rs 1.39 crore .

Out of this total earning, 70 per cent of the revenue (Rs97.21 lakh) will go to the CREST under Chandigarh Administration and 30 per cent (Rs41.76 lakh) to the cash-starved Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.

The CREST under UT administration will fund total cost of the project. The civic body will just provide its watertop space above the raw water tanks at sector 39 water works for installing floating water solar panels. So, the administration will have major share in earning. From start to commissioning of the project, the entire solar power plant will be set up by the UT.

Jurisdiction of water works being under civic body, a customary agenda will be placed before members of the corporation for final approval on 31st August. 2021. The Crest and the MC Chandigarh have been in discussion over the issue for past many months. Right now construction work of few water tank is pending and is likely to be completed by the September or October, only after that the site can be handed over to CREST for project execution.
